My Story
Ironman Lake Placid 2024 Race Report
Ironman Lake Placid was my sixth full-distance Ironman. So, in a lot of ways, I knew what to expect. However, the race was a race of many firsts as well. I wasn’t sure how everything would play out through race day.
Ironman Lake Placid 2022 Race Report – “How are you Feeling?”
There’s a standing joke between friends and me that when I say that I am “Not Feelin’ it” I tend to have a good race. Leading up to the race, people asked if I was ready and I truly did not feel ready for this race. I’ve been suffering Achilles issues for the better part of a year and a half, and I never felt like I fully recovered from my race in Chattanooga in September.
Ironman Chattanooga 2021 Race Report
So far, 2021 has been an extraordinarily challenging year for my family and me. Surprisingly, it has seemed more difficult than in 2017 when I was almost killed in a bike crash and suffered a fractured C1 vertebra, among other things. From my wife Sandra’s breast...
2017 in Review
I had big plans for 2017. I signed up for my second full Ironman (Ironman Arizona) and planned on crushing my 1st Ironman time by an hour or two. My other plans included the Patriot Half 70.3 in June and Lake Placid 70.3 in September. Things didn't go as...
Tackling Lake Placid
I've only ridden outside two times before heading to Lake Placid. Luckily, I've built up some fitness on the bike with the trainer, but my tongue surgery pushed me back a little. I've been pretty much on a liquid diet since the surgery and don't feel like I have the...
On the Road Again
On August 17th, just about a week after my tongue surgery, I got back on the road again with my road bike. I wanted to do it earlier, but with the weather, my surgery and work - I just didn't manage to do it. It would have made sense to do it earlier since we are...
The Fix is In
My training has taken a backseat to recovering from tongue surgery. On August 10th, I had surgery to fix a flap that was created from my upper teeth slicing into my tongue. Before this took place, I was presented with the option of staying awake for the surgery and...
You Win Some, You Lose Some – Week #5 Training
I am starting to see some gains in swimming and running this week, July 31st - August 6th. I also managed to lose my temporary crown on Tuesday during my open water swim class. It is somewhere at the bottom of Naticook and I didn't realize it until I was half way...
Closer to Normal – Week #4 Training
I am definitely getting closer to normal with this week of training, July 24th - 30th. Although I continue to have daily headaches with varying degrees of pain due to my concussion and limited range of motion with my head/neck, I was able to complete more than ten...
More Firsts in Week #3 Back Training
I had another week of firsts for this week of training, July 17th - 23rd. I got in my first open water swim of the year. I also did my first bike ride over two hours since May 6th and my first run over an hour since May 7th. All went well, but I was...
